What is the purpose of Gazebos and Pergolas?
Gazebos and pergolas are popular outdoor structures that add beauty, function, and value to outdoor spaces. Though they may seem similar at first glance, they serve distinct purposes and offer different benefits.
Both gazebos and pergolas enhance outdoor living experiences but cater to different preferences and needs regarding style, coverage, and functionality. The choice between them depends on the intended use, desired level of shelter, and aesthetic considerations of the outdoor space.
Gazebos
Gazebos are outdoor structures that bring charm and functionality to gardens and backyards. Characterized by their freestanding design, gazebos are often octagonal or round in shape, but they can also be found in square or rectangular forms.
However, designs can vary widely, including square, rectangular, or even custom shapes, and their sizes can range from small, cozy spaces just big enough for a couple of chairs to large pavilions that can host a group of people comfortably.
Pergolas
Pergolas are architectural features that serve both functional and decorative purposes in outdoor spaces. Unlike the fully covered roofs of gazebos, pergolas are known for their open lattice or cross-beam roofs, supported by columns or posts. This distinctive design creates an outdoor structure that enhances any garden, patio, or backyard.
What materials are used?
Both gazebos and pergolas traditionally use wood. Wood is a popular choice for gazebos and pergolas, offering a natural, warm appearance. Cedar, redwood, and pressure-treated pine are common choices due to their resistance to rot, decay, and insects. Both usually are installed along with patios.
How Augusta Landscaping installs Gazebos and Pergolas
The process begins with a request sent through our website or a meeting (follow up meetings are optional if the customer desires to have one) to understand the client’s needs, preferences, and budget. We offer optional design services (for a fee) to create a custom gazebo or pergola.
We then send our professionals to conduct a thorough site analysis, checking for level ground, soil conditions, and identifying the best location for the gazebo or pergola based on aesthetics and functionality.
Our company handles the permitting process, to ensure that the gazebo/pergola installation complies with local building codes, zoning laws, and HOA regulations.
- For a custom gazebo, Augusta Landscaping will construct the structure on-site, following the designed plans. This includes building the floor, assembling the walls and roof, and adding any custom features like electrical wiring for lights or fans.
- Custom pergolas are built on-site, starting with the installation of posts or columns, which may be anchored into the ground or onto an existing deck or patio. The beams and rafters are then added to form the roof structure.
